I have a sound coming from my 3.3 Dodge Caravan that is not normal. I replaced the serpentine belt and tensioner. Still has noise, belt off, noise goes away. I have spun all the pulleys by hand and they seem quite and normal. What am I missing? Hollis B.

In most cases this elusive noise is the alternator "clutch" pulley or the "de-coupler" pulley. This part on your van most shops don't know exists. In fact this problem has caught me off guard before I learned about this common "noise" problem. Most shops will change the alternator, which in my opinion is not necessary. The alternator does need to come off to replace this pulley, so the labor will be the same to replace this part. Only the parts bill will be several hundred dollars cheaper.... Peace and prosperity in 2012! James Morris
